Ever wonder why your Anuar sensei solve Math’s question in a very complex, unique ways? Wonder why Hilmi can solve Physic’s problem without ‘burning’ his brain as much as you? Wonder why your classmate can memorize all those Kanji without losing even one stroke in his memories? Let me tell you. Maybe it is the fact that your brain is working differently than those people, or your brain is not working at all. Nah, just joking.
Basically, human being have two parts of brain in his head, the left side of the brain and the right side. The left and right hemispheres of your brain process information in different ways. We tend to process information using our dominant side. The two sides of the brain control two different ‘modes’ of thinking and each one of us prefers one mode to the other. Which means that you can either be the ‘left brainer’ or the ‘right brainer’. But wait, there’s an exception. Though it is said that every single one of us prefers only one mode to the other, there is the ‘middle brainer’ type who are decent enough to use both side of the brain equally, though it is a bit of a rare.
Experimentation has shown that the two different sides, or hemispheres, of the brain are responsible for different manners of thinking. The following table illustrates the differences between left-brain and right-brain thinking:
Let’s take the bottom features of both brains as an example. Naturally, we are strong at one dominant part of the brain since we’re born. But it is not weird if there are more left brainer than right brainer in Malaysian’s adult, thanks to our educational system. Many a lecturer today prefer giving lectures using classes and discussion based upon experiment and research. They would come to class, talk talk and talk, without involving the student, and the student would be bored to death, er, sleep (ever heard of Tachibana?). This type of lecturer is a left brainer, for sure.
If you’re a left brainer student, who prefers to look at parts rather than the whole, you probably wouldn’t have too much problem in those type of lectures as this type of lecturers would give lectures parts by parts. But if you’re a right brainer, it is better if you study the subject first and look at the topics as a whole before you go for class.
There are many other attributes that show whether one is a left or right brainer. The conclusion here is that right brainer would struggle to do things what the left brainer do in a very simple way. So never think your colleagues is better than you, it’s just that he works his brain in a different way than you and thus can solve problems faster than you. Unless you’re a no brainer. =)
